Uganda's longest bridge which cost $125m to be commissioned today
Ugandas President Kaguta Museveni is expected to commission Source Of The Nile Bridge today.
The bridge, also known as New Nile Bridge, replaces the old Nalubaale Bridge which has been in use since 1954.
It's located in Jinja District between the source of the Nile to the south and Nalubaale Power Station.
Source Of The Nile Bridge is believed to be the longest cable-stayed bridge in Uganda and the 2nd in the whole of East Africa after Tanzania’s 680m-long Kigamboni Bridge.
The 525 metres (1,722 ft) long bridge will carry a four-lane dual highway with pedestrian walks.
It's estimated to have cost about $125m to construct with 80% of the financing done by the Japanese government.
This will be repayable in form of a soft loan of US$100 million at an annual interest rate of 0.01% in a period of 10 years but extendable to 40 years.
The new bridge has a projected lifespan of 120 years.
