UDB's Patricia Ojangole wins prestigious global leadership award

During the award ceremony held in Germany, Arshad Rab, Chairman of the International Council of Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative and CEO of the European Organisation for Sustainable Development, commended the Uganda Development Bank Limited (UDB) for its pivotal role in driving sustainable development.

As the key financier of the country's sustainable industrialisation efforts, UDB has been instrumental in implementing rigorous sustainability standards that promote profitability within planetary boundaries, serve society, and foster an environmentally and climate-friendly economy.

Rab praised UDB's unwavering dedication to holistic sustainability and their proactive stance against greenwashing, a practice that poses a significant threat not only to the institution but also to the country and the world at large. He emphasised the remarkable achievements of Patricia Ojangole, who has played a pivotal role in making UDB a sustainable institution and has made notable contributions to the field of sustainable finance on an international scale.

Expressing her gratitude, Ojangole remarked, "This is a testament and a stamp of excellence in the Bank's commitment towards sustainable banking and finance. Winning the Sustainability Leader of the Year at the Karlsruhe 2023 Sustainable Finance Awards demonstrates the Bank's intentional effort to prioritize and mainstream holistic sustainability in our practices, promoting this approach and inspiring all other stakeholders to raise awareness of sustainable development."

Ojangole also leads the international I-LEAD Group of the Sustainability Standards for Value-Driven Financial Institutions, which aims to support the comprehensive implementation of sustainability standards. This group plays a crucial role within the Sustainability Standards for Certification Initiative (SSCI), fostering innovation, learning capacity, and competency among sustainability-certified institutions.

Highlighting the collective effort required to achieve sustainability, Ojangole expressed her gratitude to the Ugandan government and other partners who have steadfastly supported UDB. Their unwavering support has enabled the bank to achieve countless milestones and participate in transformative activities that positively impact the lives of the Ugandan people.
