For the past week, several musicians and stakeholders in the entertainment industry have aired their opinions about the local awarding systems in Uganda, which they believe have unclear intentions especially to the artistes.
The online protests started after the Janzi Awards, which sparked off a debate on whether or not the winners were genuinely selected
Among the artistes that have bashed the awards is the “Bajikona” hit maker, Spice Diana, who reached a point of asking all local awards organisers never to nominate her again in any awards without her consent or they risk being summoned.
Singer Qute Kaye also affirmed that some artistes bribe the awards organisers so as to boost their brands.
Through her social media, Naira Ali has also mocked the local awards by calling upon her fellow artistes who did not win awards to organise their own and reward themselves.
“Naye nange nja kwatayo mikwano jange nga Shifah Musisi ne Grace Nakimera ne Naava Grey tukole yo Awards zaffe naffe tuzegabire nebakyali baffe mpozi nabo abasobola ozigula obuguzi. Kuba ndaba Awards zakuno zona bweziri.” she posted in Luganda, loosely translated as “I will also get my friends like Shifah Musisi, Grace Nakimera, and Naava Grey and we shall organise our own awards and reward them to ourselves and a few friends, and maybe those who will be able to buy them. It seems that’s how all local awards are.”
This month has seen a couple of awards happening in Uganda from Janzi Awards, Hipipo,Gospel Awards as well as Buzz Teenz Awards.
