The millions Jimi Wanjigi will pocket from Nation over fake obituary

Billionaire businessman Jimi Wanjigi and his wife, Nzisa, are set to pocket Sh8 million from the Nation Media Group which last year published a fake obituary claiming the tycoon was dead.

This is after the High Court made a ruling in a case where the Wanjigis had sued Nation, seeking compensation for breach of security and mental torture arising from a false obituary.

The wealthy businessman had sought Sh100 million in compensation, saying the paper not only published details of his residence, but denied him the right to dignity by treating him as a a dead person while he was still alive.

NMG denied the allegations, saying the photo was placed by a third party and carried the name of a different person – James Richard Wanjagi.

Justice ilfrida Okwany ruled in favour of the Wanjigis saying the national daily could place blame on a third party for placing the obituary, since the paper had enjoyed profit from the sale of the day’s copy.

Okwany further ordered Nation to pay Sh4 million each to Jimi and Nzisa for causing them anguish and pain.
