Tension grows on Lake Albert as 2 Ugandan fishermen are abducted

This comes barely 3 weeks after clashes between Ugandan & Congolese forces

Two Ugandan fishermen have been abducted by an armed group reportedly fro Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

They were abducted on Lake Albert near Kaiso Landing Site in Buseruka Sub-county, Hoima District.

Authorities say the abductor had similar camouflage uniform similar to that worn by Congolese police officers, Daily Monitor reports.

It's alleged that the two fishermen were illegally fishing from the restricted DRC waters -- their fishing equipment was also confiscated.

Border disputes

Disputes between the two countries over disputed border lakes have been increasing since the beginning of this year.

Congolese accuse Ugandan soldiers and fishermen of encroaching on their territory to carry out illegal fishing.

Killings

On July 10th, at least 12 fishermen were killed and several unaccounted for following clashes between Ugandan and Congolese forces on Lake Edward.

About 30 people have either died or disappeared after the clashes erupted since late June.

Congolese officials accused Ugandan forces of "shooting at everything that moves".
