Makerere University students on Monday protested against the 15% hike for first-year students.

The students want the decision rescinded saying they were not consulted and the increment is intended to deny them their right to proper education.

The students' leaders negotiated with the management to reduce the fees from earlier proposed percentages of 49% and 91% on selected programs.

Police fired tear gas and live bullets to disperse the protesting students within the university premises. At least 16 students were arrested as authorities quelled the demonstrations.

Reports indicate that 3 students have been suspended from the over disruptive activities and breaching the University Students Regulations.

"During the said illegal demonstration, you are further alleged to have disrupted lectures at the College of Business and Management Sciences by forcing students out of the lecture rooms thus interfering with the teaching function," part of VC Barnabas Nawangwe statement reads.
