A court in Ugandas capital, Kampala, is today expected to serve a sentence to a 23-year-old student whose masturbating video circulated on social media.
Lillian Rukundo, a student of Uganda Christian University, earlier this week appeared before Buganda Road Court on charges of broadcasting pornographic material and computer misuse.
She was charged with 10 counts of broadcasting pornographic material after pleading guilty.
She faces a penalty of a fine not "250 currency points" or "imprisonment not exceeding five years" or both. A currency point is equivalent to UGX20,000.
In their submission, state prosecutors said the student filmed herself masturbating with an aim of arousing social media users.
However, Rukundo told police during interrogation that her "boyfriend must have leaked her nudes since their relationship has been on the rocks".
This is the first major case related to anti-pornography act and is a major win for the Pornographic Control Committee since it started the crackdown in 2017.
The committee is mandated with "taking all necessary measures to ensure the early detection and prohibition of pornography" and making sure that "perpetrators are apprehended and prosecuted".
