Post-mortem results resolve lawyer Karanja Kabage’s “mysterious” death

An autopsy carried out in the presence of police and representatives of city lawyer Karanja Kabage has ended speculation on the deceased’s cause of death.

The postmortem established that Kabage had died of a heart attack which he suffered as he was driving along the Southern Bypass.

A family spokesman, who spoke to the press, said they were satisfied with the results which showed no foul play.

Inspector General Hilary Mutyambai had on Saturday morning directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti to probe the lawyer’s death.

A police report released last Saturday said that Kabage was driving himself on the Southern bypass when "his vehicle veered to the wrong side of the road, slowed down and appeared to be making a U-turn before slightly hitting the pavement."

After the accident, police said Kabage requested two people, a taxi driver and another good Samaritan, to take him to Nairobi Hospital where he passed after medical officers were unable to resuscitate him.

DCI detectives had collected a vomit sample in Kabage’s vehicle and had also looked into the areas the deceased visited on the day he died.

Apart from being a lawyer, Kabage was a wealthy businessman with huge interests in the insurance sector.

He also had political interests, occasionally appearing as a political analyst in local TV shows and had previously contested in the 2013 and the 2017 general elections.

On the day he died, he had attended a meeting of the first annual Mount Kenya High Level Uongozi Forum held at Safari Park.

The meeting brought together political and professional leaders from the Mt Kenya region with the intention of solving economic and political problems in the populous area.
