Police issue update on officer who killed the driver of prominent judge

Police in Kampala, Uganda, have issued details after an officer, Natasha Daisy, accidentally discharged a bullet killing the driver of Justice Musa Sekaana, Ismail Mayiga.

The 'unfortunate incident', according to police authorities, happened at Justice's residence in Muyenga.

Mayiga died in transit to the hospital where he was being taken for urgent medical attention.

A police statement says the incident is "regrettable" but "all indications show that it was not intended".

"Our officer Nagasha Dasiy while at her duty station at the home of the judge discharged a bullet that killed Mr Ismail Mayiga. Mayiga died on the way to the hospital where he was being rushed for medical attention," the statement reads.

However, the authorities were quick to maintain that the "matter is being investigated to its logical conclusion".

Nagasha has recorded a statement to help in the ongoing investigations and the body of the deceased has been taken for post-mortem.
