Ugandas parliament is today expected to vote on the controversial taxes on social media and mobile money.

President Kaguta Museveni on Monday met the ruling party Caucus members at State House in Entebbe over mobile money transactions tax.

These taxes came into effect on July 1st causing a countrywide outcry and demonstrations.

A group of concerned citizens petitioned the Constitutional Court over the Over the Top (OTT) tax with an aim of tax declaring it as illegal, null and void".

Ugandans pay a daily UGX200 tax to access social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram an Twitter among others.

"This means there will be no tax on sending or receiving money and on mobile money transactions which don’t involve withdrawals such as paying bills or sending the money you received to others".

In August, Uganda Revenue Authority reported that it collected UGX27bn from social media and mobile money taxes.
