Museveni reveals plans to transform Karamoja sub-region
While speaking during the opening ceremony of a new cement plant that is going to be constructed in a private-public partnership with a Chinese company called West International Holdings, Museveni said that the Karamoja sub-region has the potential to turn into an industrial hub because of its rich mineral deposits.
He said the Government of Uganda considers the Karamoja sub-region an area with potential and has been investing in infrastructure, including roads and electricity.
Museveni said the new Chinese company will lay the foundation for the industrialization of the region.
He also urged leaders to ensure that peace prevails in the region so that such investments cannot be disturbed.
"Many Karamojong will benefit from this cement factory. However, since all the people of Karamoja cannot work there, they can create business streams to help them indirectly make money from the factory. The workers in the factory don’t come with their gardens, yet they need food—milk, beef, etc. This is how the economy grows," a statement shared on Museveni’s official X platform read in part.
The officials from the Chinese company said that the new yet-to-be-constructed cement plant will be valued at $300 million and is likely to employ quite a number of people.
President Museveni also revealed that he has received a formal request from Kenya for compensation following the recent raid by rustlers from the neighbouring country who killed some Ugandans.
