Kaguta Museveni together with other government officials visited the disaster-hit eastern district to "assess the havoc wreaked by the recent landslides and also condole with the families that lost their loved ones".

The leader of the East African nation said "I was let down by my people" while apologizing for the delayed resettlement of those living in landslide-prone areas.

Museveni, 74, committed to the fast-tracking of the resettlement process to avoid a similar disaster in the future.

"A plan was made and the people had agreed to move but it seems there was lack of coordination in government. I apologise for this, we are now going to move very fast."

He warned persons who degrade the environment while passing a caution to persons who settle and cultivate on river banks.

"That said, I still caution you against tampering with nature. I have severally spoken about the dangers of cultivating on these mountainous slopes. Some of you had settled and were cultivating on river banks. We should not provoke mother nature," Museveni wrote on social media.

At least 47 people have died following the devastating landslides and over 600 displaced.

Search and rescue teams are on the ground as the government sends relief aid to affected persons.
