Pregnant school girls in Uganda will get at least 12 months of maternity leave under the reviewed guidelines of Ministry of Education and Sports on school retention and re-entry.

The revised recommendations are aimed at ensuring that pregnant teenage girls stay in school.
Uganda Demographic Health Survey (UDHS) survey revealed that 25% of girls aged 15-19 are mothers or pregnant with their first child.
The survey also revealed that pregnancy contributes 25% to the rate of school dropout rates in Uganda annually.

Advisors in the Ministry of Education the recommendation will help girls "prepare for childbirth" and also "continue with studies".
A UNFPA report estimates that 297,000 unsafe abortions are done every year in Uganda;140,000 abortions are among girls aged 15 to 24.
However, this move has caused mixed reactions as people argue that the maternity leave for school girls is a reward for engaging in premarital sex.
