The pickets of frustrated students around the campus have backed their leaders who unanimously agreed to call for indefinite industrial action in a consultative meeting until their grievances are solved.

The university's Guild President Papa Were Salim says the answers from the "concerned authorities" lack focus on addressing a "number of proposed unfair policies".

Since Vice Chancellor Barnabas Nawangwe assumed office last year, the Wandegeya based institution has revealed plans of scrapping students scholarship in favor of loans, suspending evening classes, phasing out semester classes and meals in halls of residences.

The security has been beefed up and several arrests have been made as police use teargas and bullets to disperse the students who turned out in cold conditions to participate in the demonstration.

The industrial action is the first under the leadership of the new Makerere University Guild President.
