Makerere University on Wednesday rescinded its earlier decision to increase fees on selected university programmes effective 2018/19 academic year.
University Council, institution's top decision making organ, announced the suspension of fees increment in the colleges of Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine & Bio Security and Humanities and Social Sciences.
Makerere's Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe made the revelation saying new proposed fees structure has been "suspended until consultations are made with the Students Guild".
The critical decision comes after two days industrial action involving peaceful demonstrations within the perimeters of the university by a section of disgruntled students.
The council had voted to set the minimum tuition fees for graduate programmes to UGX5m with post-graduate diploma and master’s students paying a uniform fees of about UGX5m and doctoral students paying between UGX7m and UGX8m annually.
