Kayihura to sue Vision Group, wants UGX300m for each 'false story'
Former Inspector General of Police Kale Kayihura, through his laws, intends to sue Vision Group, the state-owned media publishing company, for defamation and malice.
In a 5-paged "Notice of Intention to Sue"Â document, Kayihura's lawyers say Vision Group, under its publishing platforms, has been at the "forefront of a malicious, false and defamatory propaganda targeting our client".
The former IGP's legal team further states that the publishing company"has indicated that he is guilty of a number of heinous crimes".
Deliberate and sustained campaign linking him to the murder of Kaweesi
New Vision, the state-owned newspaper published by Vision Group, has been running a series of content about Kayihura's involvement in the assassination of former police spokesperson Felix Kaweesa.
Kaweesa was killed last year by motorcycle-riding gunmen near his home in Kulamabiro, outskirts of Kampala.
He was killed together with his driver and bodyguard.
The lawsuit details that the "sustained campaign" hasn't been limited to stories about Kaweesi's assassination.
It cites that the publishing company published an article alleging their client was in trouble over crime preventers.
"Both stories contained clearly false and malicious allegations consistent with your malicious defamatory campaign."
Unequivocal demands
The stories about Kayihura have caused a great pain and anguish to his family and friends, according to his legal team.
Kayihura has demanded an apology from the publishing company.
He wants UGX300m for "every story run in the New Vision, Saturday Vision, Sunday Vision, Bukedde and all corresponding digital platforms" in less than 7 days.
