In June 2016 prosecutors in Palermo reportedly announced the capture of Medhanie Yehdego Mered calling it the arrest of the year -- but it all seems wrong after a documentary by SVT unearthed damning details.
Medhanie Yehdego Mered -- believed to be the kingpin of a criminal organization responsible for illegally transporting thousands of people from the Middle East and Africa to Europe -- is one of the world's most wanted people smugglers.
The SVT documentary has revealed damning details on how the 35-year-old Eritrean people smuggler was never arrested by the European police forces and is living freely in Kampala getting drunk.
A 29-year-old refugee Medhanie Tesfamariam Behre was instead arrested, in a case of mistaken identity, and extradited to Italy where he is currently detained over human trafficking charges -- her mother even travelled to Palermo for a DNA test which confirmed the relationship.
Italian prosecutors refused to allow the DNA test result to be submitted as evidence.
SVT, a Swedish broadcaster, spoke to several people who revealed that Medhanie Mered is living freely in Kampala.
Witnesses told SVT that Mered is some kind of wild celebrity who always frequents around popular bars with Eriterians in Muyenga, an upscale Kampala suburb.
“He is some kind of a wild celebrity and no one tries to arrest him. We can’t just say we heard. I can say in absolute terms Mered is here,” another witness said," a witness told SVT.
Some Eritreans told SVT that Mered usually moves with about four security guards which are not from a registered security company and he is 'rich to pay anyone to get his freedom'
