'Fake' Catholic priest arrested for duping church members

A man posing a Catholic priest has been arrested in Kasangati for extorting money from church members at Rubaga Cathedral.

Anthony Sewanyana, 30, was arrested after he appeared at Kasangati Magistrate's Court as surety for a suspect believed to have swindled over UGX130m.

Complainants requested the court to verify the if the Catholic priest is worthy of standing as surety in a case involving such amount of money.

Verification proved that Sewanyana is not enlisted as a priest under the Catholic church.

A police statement says he was using the church title to extort money from the Catholic community.

The 'fake' priest is also accused of defrauding parishioners by "conning them money inform of donations".

The suspect confessed to authorities that "he has been in the ugly act of ‘duping’ people for many years" and was using that money to "take care of his family".

He is currently detained at Kasangati Police Station on charges of impersonation and obtaining money by false pretences.
