Ugandas Chief Justice Bart Katureebe has issued a bold statement to President Museveni after his unlawful directive to all courts.
On Thursday, President Museveni strongly directed courts of law to to deny granting bail or bond to suspected capital offenders and murder criminals in a move he said is aimed at curbing crime.
In statement seen by Pulse Live Uganda, CJ Katureebe says "courts shall continue to be guided by the Constitution and the law on matters relating to bail".
Museveni made the remarks while delivering his speech at National Budget day -- reiterating his warning to people who assassinated his loyalist MP Ibrahim Abiriga earlier this month.
The Chief Justice states that the judiciary's position on bail and bond "can only be changed when the law is amended".
“The issue of bail is governed by the Constitution and the law. Until the law is amended, bail will be granted or denied in accordance with the Constitution and the law,” Katureebe said.
He added that courts shall presume all the accused innocent until they are proven guilty in a trial.
The 73-year-old president has been accused by the opposition and other law makers of 'raping the Constitution' several times for his own benefits.
