Whitehead Communication released a report mid-July after a survey on the effect of the controversial taxes on social media and mobile money in Uganda.
The report indicates a notable decrease in social media usage and a huge decline in mobile money usage in the country.
The survey was conducted in 93 districts between 13 July 2018 and 16 July 2018, two weeks after the controversial taxes came into effect.
The behemoth of social media saw a decline in usage from 96% (representing usage in the last 6 months) to 85% after introduction of the UGX200 daily tax, according to the Whitehead Communications survey of 2,918 respondents.
The report also reveals that mobile money usage significantly reduced from 93% in the last 6 months to 47%.
57% of the respondents said they were accessing social media using VPN services and 40% pay the tax.
44% transacted less since the introduction of mobile money tax, 4% transacted more and 3 transacted the same as before.
