Ugandans from all walks of life are mourning the passing of Junior Defence Minister Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, who died of a suspected heart attack on her way to Mulago Hospital.

Her family confirmed the tragic news, with her father, Philemon Mateke, a former State Minister for Regional Affairs, sharing that they were on their way to seek medical attention when she passed away.
Born on July 15, 1974, in Chahi, Kisoro District, Mateke had an illustrious career in politics. She served in various capacities, including Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, where she played a significant role in shaping Uganda's security policies.
Previously, she held the position of Minister of State for Gender, Labour, and Social Development, contributing to the empowerment of women and children across Uganda.
Ugandans mourn
As the nation comes to terms with her passing, many prominent figures have shared their condolences, highlighting Mateke's exemplary leadership and impact.
Chairwoman of the NRM Women’s League, Lydia Wanyoto, expressed her sorrow: "She was a great woman and an exemplary leader. My condolences to the family and may her soul rest in peace. It is a very sad day for us."
Wanyoto also remembered attending a Thanksgiving event with Mateke, noting her dedication to duty.
Human rights activist Sarah Bireete described Mateke as a "deep thinker" who was instrumental in the cabinet, despite not always being in the limelight. Bireete praised her ability to influence significant decisions behind the scenes.
Lawyer Edgar Tabaaro and former Justice Minister Ephraim Kamuntu echoed similar sentiments, praising Mateke's calm, reasoned leadership style.
Kamuntu, who worked with both Mateke and her father, emphasized her patriotism and sharp reasoning skills, calling her death "shattering."
Public health advocate Richard Kwizera reflected on Mateke's contributions to Kisoro and Uganda, particularly in the areas of education and healthcare.
"Her tireless efforts as a Member of Parliament and Minister of State for Defence and Veteran Affairs, as well as her previous role as Minister of Youths & Children, have left an indelible mark on our nation," he noted, adding that her leadership and wisdom would be greatly missed.
Mateke was also deeply involved in philanthropy, leading the Nyirabashitsi Foundation, which focused on providing educational opportunities to underprivileged children. Her legacy as a compassionate leader and advocate for the youth will be remembered for generations.
