The EALA representative and former MP for Ngora in the Ugandan Parliament, yesterday Saturday, October 21 exchanged marital vows with Counsel Lubega, a former MP contestant for Makindye West, at the iconic church in Munyonyo.
The well attended church service was presided over by Bishop Joseph Oliach Eciru, the Bishop of Soroti, and attended by several priests from the eastern region.
In his sermon, the bishop congratulated the couple upon obtaining what he termed as their “mining license," having been and sired children together for a long time.
Hon Amongin and Lubega had been together for about 20 years, having met and became friends when they served as student leaders at Makerere University in the early 2000s.
After the church wedding, the couple hosted their guests at the Kololo Independence Grounds, where Deputy Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa was the chief guest.
Tayebwa, a close friend of the couple for 22 years, praised them for sticking together and for being one another's rocks.
“Normally we go to weddings to give advice to the newlyweds, but I think for Achilles and Jackie, we have come to receive advice. Your love is true advice that we can call use. You are a great couple and we congratulate you," he said.
Capt. Mike Mukula, another close family friend praised Hon Amongin’s resilience and hard work, which he said, had elevated her over the years and even put her on President Yoweri Museveni’s radar.
“When I first introduced her to the President, he immediately liked her and took interest, and now she is a friend of the President," Mukula said.
“That is why in the last EALA elections, even though there were many very powerful people interested in that position, the NRM CEC ultimately zeroed on her,” he said.
The wedding was also graced by the EALA Speaker, Hon Joseph Ntarikutimana, as well as other members of the regional assembly.
Also present were Ugandan Ministers David Bahati, and Margaret Muhanga, scores of members of the Ugandan parliament, High Court judges, lawyers and other dignitaries.
