LycaMobile experiences massive cyber attack

Except for the United States, Australia, Ukraine, and Tunisia, the attack hit all markets throughout the weekend, including Uganda.

The attack, according to the company's notification, interrupted some national and international calls, as well as consumers' and retailers' ability to access top-ups through its channels.

However, the announcement suggested that mobile telecommunications services had been restored in all of its markets, albeit some operational services were still being restored.

The organisation did not confirm whether the hack involved ransomware. Ransomware assaults are growing more widespread, and they can have disastrous consequences for enterprises of all kinds.

If the incident was a ransomware strike, the perpetrators most likely encrypted the company's data and demanded a ransom payment in exchange for the decryption key.

It's also possible that the attack wasn't a ransomware attack, but rather a more typical hacking attack. In this situation, the attackers may have stolen consumer data or acquired unauthorised access to's systems.

The cyberattack on LycaMobile came just days after Motel One revealed it was a victim of a ransomware attack, but the company’s preventive measures helped it thwart the attack before it could do further damage.

In response to the news, Mike Newman, CEO of My1Login said, “This is an example of a cyberattack having very real and physical impacts on society. Last Friday, social media sites were awash with complaints from angry customers over their inability to send text messages and make calls. It is now clear this was caused by what looks like a massive cyberattack that impacted all of LycaMobile markets.”

Newman said that based on the initial details, it could be a ransomware attack on .

“It is clear the attackers managed to get deep enough into the service provider’s network to take down key services – this could indicate it was ransomware.”

LycaMobile said the attack is currently being investigated and working to determine the full extent of the damage. The company also said it is also working to improve its security measures to prevent future attacks.

“In the meantime, customers should be vigilant and monitor their accounts for any suspicious activity. Customers should also change their passwords immediately and be careful about clicking on any links in emails or text messages from .If LycMobile customers see anything suspicious, they should report it to customer support immediately.”
