Okiot, a husband to Kyenjojo Grade I Magistrate Ms. Faith Irene Kwagala, was reportedly traveling to Entebbe for a court session when a cement mixer truck lost control and collided with his vehicle.
The truck, belonging to Seyani Brothers and bearing registration number UAN 836D, rammed into the center road barriers before toppling onto Okiot's Mitsubishi RVR (UBQ 371P) at the Nkumba University traffic lights.
The driver of the truck reportedly sought medical attention at a nearby facility after the accident.
Okiot, an advocate specializing in tax, data privacy, and compliance law, practiced at Maldes Law Firm in Kampala. He was also a law tutor at Uganda Christian University and co-founded the Technolegal Advisory Centre Uganda.
This tragedy marks the second fatal accident on Entebbe Road within a week. On April 13th, four students from Buganda Royal Institute lost their lives in a collision while attempting to overtake another vehicle on their way to a party.
These incidents highlight the concerning rise in road fatalities in Uganda. According to the 2023 Annual Traffic and Safety Report, the country saw a 30% increase in road deaths last year, with over 4,179 lives lost. The report also documented a rise in overall accidents, with 23,608 cases recorded in 2023 compared to 20,394 in 2022.
