Skillz Dance Festival 2024 launches with environmental focus

The Skillz Dance Festival has officially launched its seventh edition, ready to captivate audiences from October 18 to 20 with an array of vibrant dance performances and engaging activities. With dancers from across Africa coming together, the festival aims to celebrate the rich and diverse culture of dance, with a commitment to social responsibility and raising awareness on critical issues.

The launch event was held at the British Council in Kamwokya

The launch event was held at the British Council in Kamwokya on 18 September, where various dance crews and troupes performed, showcasing their skills while addressing important topics such as climate change and corruption. A standout performance came from Sosolya Udungu, a dance troupe primarily made up of children, who delivered creative routines and compelling poems. Their performance highlighted the consequences of environmental degradation resulting from poor decision-making, drawing attention to the urgent need for environmental conservation. Another troupe presented a thought-provoking piece examining the fashion industry's impact on climate change, aligning with the festival’s broader goal to use the arts as a platform for social awareness.

The Skillz Dance Festival has garnered significant backing through grants provided by the British Council, which aims to empower African festivals and promote cultural exchange. This year, Skillz Dance Fest was one of only seven events selected for funding from over 3,000 applications across the continent, affirming the festival’s importance in the African cultural landscape. The support reflects a recognition of the festival’s efforts to contribute to the growth of the arts and to highlight dance as a medium of social and cultural dialogue.

The festival will host four main competitions: the Ultimate Skillz Breaking Battles, Afro-Fusion, Urban Freestyle Battles, and the much-awaited Next Move Battles. These contests will not only spotlight the immense talent of dancers across Africa but also serve as a means to build connections and networks between various festivals and events within the region. The competitions are expected to draw a diverse audience, offering both entertainment and an opportunity for dance enthusiasts to connect with one another.

In partnership with IGC Fashion, the festival also aims to bring attention to the fashion industry's environmental impact. By intertwining fashion and dance, the festival encourages participants and attendees to think critically about how their creative expressions can intersect with social and environmental responsibility. This collaboration reflects a broader trend within the festival to ensure that its activities contribute positively to social discourse and community development.

The Skillz Dance Festival is more than just a dance event; it stands as a testament to the role of festivals in Africa as carriers of tradition, culture, and community values. With its emphasis on stimulating local economies and enriching the lives of participants and attendees, the festival seeks to strengthen the bond between dance and cultural heritage. Each year, the festival has grown in prominence, uniting dancers and audiences through a shared love of artistic expression.
