Bajjo: Why Bebe Cool should cost Shs1.5m, Shs150k for Pinky

Events promoter Andrew Mukasa, alias Bajjo, shocked Ugandans on Wednesday when he said Bebe Cool should be paid Shs1.5 million to perform at a show, valuing him less than younger talent like Grenade Official.

The reason: "He has no song at all. Nyege Nyege and Tick Talk can't even move a lame person."

Bajjo, who is the coordinator of the National Promoters Association, also said that Pinky deserves Shs150,000.

David Lutalo, according to Bajjo -- is the most valued musician at Shs7m, coming below Bobi Wine, who is now a politician, valued at Shs20 million. The reasons for giving Wine that figure are obvious.

Asked why Lutalo is valued higher than the rest, he said: "Because he is a crowd-puller. Lutalo and Sheebah are crowd-pullers. Mzee [Fred] Sebatta may pass by and you don't even notice him, but when he announces a show, you'll come."

He added: "But Ziza Bafana and Bebe Cool will always attract your attention but you won't attend their concerts."

Bajjo offered Gravity Omutujju Shs1.5-2m because "he has bubble gum music."

"Differentiate a person who sings Kabisi Ka Ndagala (David Lutalo), Nkwata Bulungi (Sheebah), Malaika (Winnie Nwagi); those are songs with a message and they attract revelers, but Gravity just helps people forget their problems," he said.

He said some musicians have devalued themselves.

"The fanbase Chameleoene has in Uganda; if he could create demand; the reason Eddy Kenzo is better than them, he created demand. I told the same thing to David Lutalo, to stop going at any show he is invited to perform. If Lutalo becomes scarce, no one can outearn him. Winnie Nwagi and Sheebah also need to be scarce. Sheebah Karungi and David Lutalo stop going to small shows. If you want to see that Lutalo can fill up Namboole, let him go a year without performing in some places, for instance, Mukono, Masaka and Luwero," Bajjo said.

He also noted that Juliana Kanyomozi, despite demanding Shs15m to perform, can't pull crowds. That she is only good for corporate functions.

"She can only get revellers upcountry if you team her up with singers like Lutalo," he said.

Meanwhile, promoters also want to stop holding shows where entrance fees is Shs10,000.

"We've chased concerts of Shs10,000 from Kampala because they attract all sorts of people. You rather have 1000 people that you can properly organise for. A person who can pay Shs20,000 for a concert has no villagism. I'll only allow shows that cost Shs10,000 if they are hosted in stadiums which are spacious, but venues like Freedom City, Theatre Labonita... We need to organise and standardise operations of our work," he said.

Bajjo released a list containing new costs for hiring singers, giving Kenzo Shs7 million, Pallaso (Shs3.5 million), Jose Chameleone (Shs5 million), Grenade (Shs1.5-2m), Sheebah Karungi (Shs5-6m), Winnie Nwagi (5-6m), Spice Diana (4-5m), Mesach Ssemakula (3-3.5m), Geoffrey Lutaaya (2-3m), King Saha (2.5m) and Kapa Cat (Shs500-600,000).
