Uganda’s conservation efforts have received a new symbol of pride and heritage at Entebbe International Airport, where two stunning gorilla sculptures have been installed.

These sculptures, one at the Arrivals section and another at Departures, provide both a memorable photo opportunity for travellers and a welcoming symbol of Uganda’s commitment to wildlife conservation.

The sculptures stand out in tribute to the late silverback gorilla, Ruhondeza, known as “The Gentle Giant of Bwindi.”

Positioned at Departures, this sculpture honours Ruhondeza’s legacy and marks the close of a traveller’s journey in Uganda, symbolising both the majesty and peaceful nature of these magnificent creatures.

The Legacy of Ruhondeza

Ruhondeza was the dominant silverback of the Mubare gorilla family, the first group of mountain gorillas to be habituated for tourism in Uganda. His calm and peaceful leadership earned him the name “Ruhondeza,” which means “one who loves sleeping.”

He led his group with remarkable serenity, and by the time of his death in 2012, he had been seen by over 50,000 tourists.

Ruhondeza’s legacy as the most photographed gorilla in Bwindi remains a symbol of Uganda’s success in gorilla conservation and tourism.

A Symbol of Conservation Success

Unlike many of his peers, Ruhondeza spent his final days near the village, in an extraordinary act of trust with the local community. His life story reflects the deep bond between the people of Uganda and their gorilla population.

The sculptures now standing at Entebbe Airport ensure that his peaceful leadership and the conservation of Uganda’s mountain gorillas are remembered and celebrated.
