The Uganda Police has issued a fresh warning to all road users, reminding them that ignorance of traffic laws is no defence if caught speeding. The reminder follows the enforcement of the Traffic and Road Safety (Prescription of Speed Limits) Regulations, 2024.

Faridah Nampiima, the public relations officer for the Police Traffic Directorate, shared the updated limits, urging drivers to slow down and stay informed.

“‘Ignorance of the law is no excuse.’ Let’s pick something here, it might save you tomorrow,” Nampiima said.

She pointed out that the maximum speed limit for urban roads is now 30km/hr, while highways that pass through urban areas have a cap of 50km/hr for both vehicles and motorcycles.

For paved roads, speed limits range between 30km/hr and 90km/hr depending on vehicle classification, and 60km/hr for motorcycles. On gravel roads, vehicles should not exceed 30km/hr to 60km/hr, while motorcycles are restricted to 30km/hr.

Community access roads carry a blanket limit of 30km/hr for all vehicle types. Meanwhile, expressways and dual carriageways in Uganda now have speed limits ranging from 40km/hr to 100km/hr, depending on the classification of the vehicle.

Faridah cautioned that exceeding these limits is a punishable offence. “A person who contravenes any provision in the above regulation commits an offence on the road and he or she can be held liable on conviction,” she said.

She called on Ugandans to take responsibility for road safety. “Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Slowing down on roads significantly reduces the severity of accidents and saves lives.”

The police continue to carry out enforcement checks across the country to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
