Tayebwa elected to represent East Africa in OACPS-EU General Assembly

This was during the 64th session of the OACPS Parliamentary Assembly and Constitutive Sessions of the OACPS-EU Joint Parliamentary Assemblies held in Luanda, Angola, from 17th to 21st February.

Tayebwa's role will encompass representing Mauritius, Seychelles, Djibouti, Comoros, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi.

Key areas of focus for Tayebwa include the implementation of the Samoa Agreement, which replaces the longstanding Cotonou Agreement.

The Deputy Speaker expressed strong intentions to engage with European Union coalitions on various issues such as climate change, gender parity, energy transition, human rights, peace, conflict resolution, and democracy.

Addressing concerns of unfair trade practices and energy issues, Tayebwa emphasized the importance of exploiting resources sustainably without compromising the environment. He stressed the need for Africa to have a fair voice in global discussions, particularly regarding energy transition.

Martin Peters Owino, a Kenyan MP, expressed confidence in Tayebwa's ability to effectively represent the East African region, emphasizing the importance of communication and unity in addressing shared challenges.

Opposition Chief in the Ugandan Parliament, John Baptist Nambeshe, highlighted the significant opportunities Tayebwa's election brings for Uganda and the region. He emphasized the need for strong negotiators like Tayebwa to address unique challenges and foster unity among African nations.

The OACPA-EU Assembly serves as a platform for elected MPs from African, Caribbean, and Pacific states, as well as Members of the European Parliament, to collaborate on various issues of mutual interest.

Tayebwa's election represents a notable milestone for East Africa, signaling a proactive approach towards addressing regional and global challenges through diplomatic engagement and cooperation.
