Owing to a number of measures that have ensured cross-border security and kept crime rates down, the study indicated “improvements in Law and Order throughout Uganda.”
This is entailed in the Governance and Security Program Annual Performance Review Report for FY 2022/23 which was unveiled on Tuesday by the Justice Law and Order Sector (JLOS).
As a result, the report points out that public confidence in the security system as well as the judiciary has significantly improved during the period in review.
“Peace and stability prevailed inside the country mainly due to the collaboration and cooperation of security actors within and outside Uganda, and with the people of Uganda,” noted Sam Wairagala, the Deputy Senior Technical Advisor JLOS, who presented the report.
“The capacity to handle emerging threats is tremendously improved. There was a high level of combat readiness... The crime rate and Accident fatality rate reduced to 524 and 9.9 respectively,” he added.
The report also credits government efforts to provide advanced training to security personnel as well as boost their welfare.
In the year under review, a total of 1,589 housing units were constructed including 700 for UPDF, 569 for Uganda Police, and 320 for Uganda Prisons.
The CCTV surveillance project was also noted to have revolutionized crime response and prevention with, the system being operational (Phase II) in 71 districts, 10 cities, 20 municipalities, 35 towns, 6 border points, and all major highways.
Speaking as Chief Guest at the report launch, Minister for East African Community Affairs Hon Rebecca Kadaga hailed Uganda’s unrelenting commitment to host refugees who fled conflicts in neighbouring countries
“While we have no control over the security situation in our neighboring countries; the government has maintained an open door policy and we now have 1.5 million refugees,” Kadaga remarked.
“We thank our development partners for the help they have extended to us, but we could use some more support because of the numbers which are fluctuating all the time,” she said.
The Governance and Security Program Annual Performance Review Report was attended by Minister Jim Muhwezi for Security, Hon. Muruli Mukasa for Public Service, Hon Okello Oryem the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Honourable Jacob Oboth State Minister for Defence and Hon.
