President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Wednesday officially commissioned Lot 1 of the Kampala Flyover Project at Clock Tower.

The project, valued at USD 80 million, is the largest infrastructure project in Kampala and is expected to enhance mobility, reduce travel times, and improve drainage systems across the city.

During the commissioning, President Museveni expressed satisfaction with the progress of the flyover, noting that his own experience using it proved that it has already eased congestion in the city centre.

“I chose to go through the City Centre and used the Kampala Flyover. I didn't encounter any congestion as we used to. It is not yet fully complete, but it has solved all our problems there!” he said.

Project Details and Benefits

The commissioned Lot 1 consists of several key components, including:

Clock Tower Flyover: 584 metres long, with a 366-metre bridge.

Pedestrian Bridges: Located at Shoprite (92m), Clock Tower (238.7m), and Kibuli (40m), ensuring pedestrian safety.

Nsambya Underpass: 375.8 metres long, with a 4-lane road section to ease movement.

Junction Improvements: At major points including Shoprite, Clock Tower, Nsambya, and Kibuli to improve traffic flow.

Road Widening: Covering 3,190 metres, aimed at expanding key roads within the project area.

Additionally, the project includes new box culverts at St. Denis, Pan African, and Kayuga, which will enhance drainage and mitigate flooding in the affected areas.

Call for Responsible Infrastructure Use

President Museveni urged Ugandans to avoid littering and misuse of public infrastructure, highlighting that sustainable development requires collective responsibility. He also encouraged citizens to leverage the improved infrastructure to boost economic activities and enhance Uganda’s competitiveness in Africa’s growing market.

With Lot 1 now completed, attention shifts to Lot 2, which will further extend and enhance the flyover network, contributing to a more organised and efficient city transport system.
