Museveni praised Pope Francis for his influential leadership as a spiritual figure and theologian. He highlighted the Pope’s unwavering dedication to faith and his significant role in revitalizing the Catholic Church's mission in a world becoming increasingly secular.

“He will be remembered as an extraordinary spiritual leader and a deeply respected theologian,” Museveni stated. “His voice for peace, social justice, compassion, and humility touched the hearts of millions and inspired hope among the faithful.”

The President also acknowledged Pope Francis' efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue, emphasising his approach to unity with other faiths. "His readiness and enthusiasm to engage with other faiths, such as Islam and Orthodox Christianity, made him a religious leader truly in the footsteps of Jesus, as shown in the parable of the Good Samaritan from the book of Luke," Museveni remarked.

Museveni extended Uganda’s solidarity with Catholics worldwide during this period of mourning. "We stand in solidarity with Catholics in Uganda and around the globe during this time of mourning," he added.

At the time of writing, the Vatican has not yet set a date for Pope Francis’ funeral. His passing, which ends a remarkable papacy that began in 2013, has sparked tributes from leaders and communities worldwide, all mourning the loss of a revered spiritual leader.

President Museveni concluded the statement with a prayer for Pope Francis’ soul: “May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
