President Yoweri Museveni has reportedly approved the establishment of three new districts -- Mukuju, Mulanda, and a third to be named by stakeholders -- along with the elevation of Tororo Municipality to Tororo City.

This move comes as Uganda prepares for 2026 elections, which implies creation of new counties to accommodate more Members of Parliament (MPs) and other elective positions.

Mulanda, one of the newly formed districts, is the home district of Ofwono Opondo, the Government Spokesman who recently announced his plans to step down.

Opondo had expressed interest in contesting for the position of MP for the elderly in the upcoming elections, where he was set to challenge Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the current MP for the Eastern Region.

The Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has appointed Brigadier General Chris Bagonza as the new Chief of Staff for the UPDF Land Forces (COS LF), according to Colonel Chris Magezi, the Acting Director of Defence Public Information.

However, this new development could alter Opondo's political ambitions.

The announcement followed a peace-building meeting at State House Entebbe, which was attended by regional leaders and officials.

The creation of these new administrative units aims to improve service delivery and address long-standing ethnic tensions between the Japadhola and Itesot communities.

Mukuju will include Tororo County North and South, while Mulanda will cover West Budama South and Central.

The third district, which is yet to be named, will encompass West Budama North and North-East.

This restructuring is based on the recommendations from an expert report and will play a significant role in Uganda's electoral roadmap for the 2026 general elections.
