Emmanuel Akandwanaho, a Bachelor of Science in Land Economics graduate from Makerere University’s class of 2022, has secured a place in the Schwarzman Scholars Class of 2026.
He will study a fully-funded, one-year Master’s degree in Global Affairs at Schwarzman College, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.
Emmanuel makes history as the first undergraduate alumnus from Makerere University and the second Ugandan to receive this highly competitive scholarship.
The Schwarzman Scholars Programme was established in 2015 by Stephen A. Schwarzman, co-founder and CEO of Blackstone, to prepare future global leaders to understand China's growing influence.
Each year, it selects 150 outstanding young people worldwide based on their academic achievements, leadership skills, and commitment to positive change.

From 2017 to 2022, Emmanuel pursued Land Economics and graduated with Second Class Upper Honours. At Makerere, he actively participated in student leadership and campus initiatives.
He was Class Representative for five consecutive years, Speaker of the Makerere Association of Surveying Students, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission at the College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology (CEDAT), and Student Representative on the 31st Governing Council of the Institution of Surveyors of Uganda.
In 2019, Emmanuel launched the Makerere Gavel Club, an affiliate of Toastmasters International, to tackle communication and personal development gaps among students. The club helps students gain confidence, improve public speaking abilities, and develop leadership skills.
Today, it is among the most vibrant student-led initiatives at Makerere, having trained over 200 students since it started.
