Coca-Cola Beverages Uganda (CCBU) has announced plans to roll out innovative measures to reduce water usage at its Rwenzori and Namanve plants.

Muminu Kirunda, the Manufacturing Development Specialist at CCBU, emphasised the importance of water in both their production process and the communities they serve.

"Water is essential to life, our beverages, and the communities we serve. We aim to promote water stewardship within our business to increase water use efficiency and return safe water to communities," he stated.

At the core of CCBU’s water conservation efforts is the use of data to improve operational efficiency.

The company has implemented hourly monitoring of the returnable glass bottle line during cleaning, along with daily performance reviews to track water usage.

This data-driven approach helps ensure the company operates as efficiently as possible, while maintaining high production standards. Kirunda explained,

“By monitoring our water usage, we are working to operate as efficiently as possible.

In addition to monitoring, CCBU has fostered a culture of water responsibility within the company, launching awareness campaigns and appointing "water champions" at its plants.

These champions promote best practices and encourage employees to keep water efficiency a top priority.

A Broader Water Initiative Across Africa

CCBU’s efforts are part of a wider initiative by The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling partners across Africa.

In September 2024, Coca-Cola announced a nearly USD 25 million investment to tackle water-related challenges in local communities across 20 African countries.

This initiative, set to run through 2030, will be spearheaded by the Global Water Challenge (GWC) and involve key environmental partners such as The Nature Conservancy (TNC), IUCN, and WWF.
