Video: Watch Bobi Wine, Bebe Cool performing Philly Lutaaya’s ‘Born in Africa’
But Kenzo is not the only musician who was inspired by Lutaaya or loves his songs. Lots of local artistes, including Bebe Cool and Bobi Wine, have previously shown love for the song and performed it for their fans on music tours.
The largest audience Cool has ever performed the song for is probably when he was invited to perform at the 90th birthday of former South African president, Nelson Mandela, which was held at Hyde Park in London, UK in 2008.
The event was attended by former US president Bill Clinton, former British Premier Gordon Brown, US talk-show host Oprah Winfrey and actors Will Smith and Forest Whitaker.
Cool shared the stage with Alicia Keys, Papa Wemba, Sipho Mabuse, Kenya's Suzanna Owiyo, Soweto Gospel Choir, Sudanese rapper Emmanuel Jal and South African RnB star Loyiso.
A video has also been shared on TikTok showing Wine performing the song live and he was wearing the NUP red bellet which means the performance was recent.
Kenzo also recently performed the song for a huge audience in Puerto Rico and he has promised to keep pushing it wherever he goes. The YouTube of his remake of the song already has over 177,000 views.
The original song has very inspiring lyrics. “Don't worry where you are coming from; So wonderful when people meet; Down in Africa the land of the sun; We sing and dance it depends on the mood,” goes part of the song.
The chorus goes: “I was born; Born in Africa; Sing my song; Music Africana.”
Another verse goes: “I was born to sing; I feel the music; It's in the soul; I was born to dance; I hear the rhythm; It's in the drums.”
