Uganda's biggest opposition party apologises over 'tribalism fueled' tweet
Forum For Democratic Change (FDC) has apologised over a tribalism fueled tweet they made last week.
FDC, Uganda's biggest political party, was criticised on social media when they shared a picture of Deputy Attorney General seemingly grazing his cattle with an AK47 gun.
The picture's caption read: "A man (Mwesigwa Rukutana, Deputy Attorney General of #Uganda) grazing his cattle the Karamoja style in Ankole. Will UPDF that disarmed Karamojongs move to disarm Banyankore who graze cattle with guns?"
FDC said on Twitter that the tweet fell "below the values and the principles we hold as a party and we apologise sincerely for the use of Banyankole people as a whole and to all Ugandans".
President Kaguta Museveni has severally talked highly about government's accomplishments of disarming the Karimajong of northern Uganda recovering over 40,000 guns.
The Karimajong used the guns to aid them in cattle rustling in neighbouring areas and across the border.
Twitter users were quick to criticise FDC for fueling tribal sentiments by zeroing on Banyankole, Museveni's tribe -- which for so long has been alleged to be favoured with government jobs and state privilege.
One Twitter user called Kasabiiti said: "Tweets like this make some of us fearful of the future."
"And such a tweet is from the country's leading opposition party? How many Banyankore are in this picture?," Silver Kayondo wrote.
"Haha! Uganda Opposition is a joke. So you want to play the tribalism card?" Don said.
