Ugandan woman scientist and lecturer Dr. Angela Musiimenta has been awarded for her outstanding research achievements aimed at improving maternal health.
Dr. Musiimenta was awarded €150,000 (about UGX673m) in the 1st ever German-African Innovation Incentive Award in form of project funding.
Her project is mobile based and seeks to improve information for pregnant women in the rural areas of Uganda.
The application provides women with information about healthy eating, advantages of breast feeding, and the necessity of having antenatal check-ups.
The mobile application is a database of videos and audios for maternal health, available both for the literate and illiterate benefiting from the audio segment.
In 2016, Dr. Musiimenta was among seven researchers to be provided with $3 million for 5 years to ensure research in global health in low- and middle- income countries using real-time technology and mobile devices with Technology.
She is a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department, Information Technology at the Institute of Computer Science, Mbarara University of Science and Technology.
