Israelis government has rejected to recognise the Jewish community of Uganda, Abayudaya, after several years of deliberations.
The country's Interior Ministry rejected an application for recognition submitted by a Ugandan Jew, Kibita Yosef, who has lived in the Middle Eastern country for the last one year.
The ministry, which has given Kibita until June 14 to leave the country, says he can challenge its decision in the High Court of Justice.
Jewish converts from Uganda, Abayudaya community, has about 2,000 members and have existed in the East African country since the early 1990s.
The community lives mostly near the Stern Synagogue on Nabugoye Hill, outside Mbale District.
Converts are eligible to immigrate to Israel under the Law of Return only if they come from recognized Jewish communities -- and Abayudaya, according to the Interior Ministry, is not a recognised Jewish community.
In 2016, the Jewish Agency had ruled that the Abayudaya are a recognized Jewish community but the ministry refused to approve requests to immigrate to Israel.
