Uganda to experience El nino until December – Experts warn
In a statement issued by UNMA on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, the experts said that the weather conditions will be experienced between September and December this year and will happen in almost all parts of the country.
The statement also indicated that El Nino will most likely be associated with weather-related hazards and disasters such as landslides in Bududa and flooding in some parts of the country.
UNMA further cautioned the public that the weather conditions may also disrupt social and economic activities and cause the loss of livelihoods in most parts of the country.
The statement listed measures that local governments and the public need to take to avoid the effects of any hazards or disasters. These included: conducting sensitisation of communities; working closely with Red Cross teams; regularly getting weather updates from UNMA; conducting routine monitoring and assessment, including surveillance and reporting of disasters to the Office of the Prime Minister; updating and activating the multi-hazard district contingency plans; and identifying temporary sites for relocation.
It should be noted that some parts of Uganda, such as Bududa, experience landslides during heavy rain periods, which come with displacement and loss of property for the people.
Some parts of the Kampala Metropolitan Area, such as Bwaise and Kampala Central Business District, among others, also experience flooding, which disables transportation in the city.
