This trending mock wedding has raised tuition for Oxford student who married herself
Siima Sabiti, a Ugandan radio presenter, married her friend in a mock wedding on Friday.
Guests had to pay to be part of the wedding -- which Ugandans on social media have portrayed as the wedding of the year.
Tickets to the wedding were available at the entrance of the venue -- costing UGX20,000 (about $5.31).
The proceeds from the wedding are to be contributed towards funding tuition of Lulu Jemimah -- an Oxford university student who married herself.
Sabiti and her friend Bernard Mukasa thought staging a mock wedding to raise funds to support Lulu would be a great idea.
The "couple", which met for the first time at the mock wedding on Friday, collaborated with brands and used social media to hype the ceremony using the hashtag #TheKaBernzWedding.
Sabiti told BBC that: "We're hoping to make a difference - we're in a Uganda shilling economy, Lulu's got to raise her fees in pounds. I'm feeling positive that we can make some contribution to helping her finish her degree."
Lulu married herself at a £2 (about UGX9,800) ceremony attended by close friends -- a move she says was aimed at achieving her goals at becoming an academic -- rather than succumbing to the pressure from her parents to settle down and find a good husband.
She is studying masters in creative writing at the prestigious Oxford University and raising tuition for her last academic year.
Lulu's GoFundMe campaign has raised £7,200 of the required £10,194 in just 25 days.
