This is after Police blocked their end-of-year prayers organised by the United Forces of Change led by former FDC president, Kiiza Besigye, and National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi at Sharing Hall Nsambya on December 30, 2022.
Besigye heightened the importance of these prayers to the opposition noting that they have passed through a very difficult year and needed to intercede with God for a better 2023.
It should be remembered that this is not the first opposition meeting to be blocked by police. The force insists that such gatherings need clearance from security (Inspector General of Police) which most opposition members don’t seek.
However, Julius Ssentamu, a human rights advocate said since the country is in a multi-party system, each party should be left to carry out their activities freely without interference. He further told the change-seeking parties to sue security agencies, police in particular.
Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said the planned end-of-year prayer meeting was not cleared.
Citing terrorism threats in the country, security agencies resolved that all public events in the country must be cleared by the Inspector General of Police in accordance with Public Order and Management Act (POMA).
He further advised members of the public not to attend illegal gatherings this festive season.
In 2020, former Forum for Democratic Change president, Dr. Kizza Besigye, and the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine formed an alliance dubbed United Forces of Change.
There have been cries of oppression targeting transition democratic seeking forces in the country in the concluding year, 2022.
The opposition has always been quoted complaining about unfair treatment from the ruling Government, rampant abductions, arrests, and detention of politicians as well as their supporters, among other issues.
