Bishop title in Pentecostal faith explained

American evangelist Bishop LaDonna Osborn has clarified the meaning of bishophood in the Pentecostal tradition following questions sparked by the consecration of Pastor Patience Rwabwogo.

Rwabwogo, founder and lead pastor of Covenant Nations Church and daughter of President Yoweri Museveni, was consecrated an Episcopal Bishop on August 23, 2026, at the church’s Maya Campus.

The ceremony coincided with Covenant Nations Church’s 20th anniversary. The ministry started as a house fellowship before growing into a wider church organisation.

Osborn led the consecration, which was also attended by Nigerian cleric Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye and his wife.

Rwabwogo’s elevation, however, revived debate over the use of the title “bishop” among Pentecostal and Born-Again churches.

Much of the discussion centred on whether Pentecostal churches, which have historically distanced themselves from some traditions associated with older denominations, should adopt episcopal titles, vestments and symbols.

In historic episcopal churches, including the Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox and Anglican traditions, bishops occupy a defined position within the church hierarchy. Their selection, ordination and authority follow rules established by their respective denominations.

The word bishop itself comes from the Greek episkopos, commonly translated as “overseer”. The term appears in the New Testament in passages dealing with church leadership.

Historic churches have developed extensive traditions around the office. Depending on the denomination, these may include apostolic succession, theological training, years of ordained ministry and responsibility for a defined diocese.

Symbols such as the crozier, mitre, episcopal ring and pectoral cross also became associated with the office over centuries.

Pentecostal churches do not have one universal structure governing the title. Independent Pentecostal and charismatic ministries may therefore define the office differently.

Speaking before Rwabwogo’s consecration, Bishop Osborn addressed that distinction.

“There are many traditions here. To some of you, the title of bishop is very familiar,” she said.

“I want you to know that there are many Christian traditions that use the title. It is a Bible title, it means overseer.”

Osborn rejected the suggestion that becoming a bishop places a Christian above other believers.

“It is not someone that is closer to God. It is for someone who has been set apart to oversee and facilitate the Kingdom of God,” she said.

She then made clear which tradition governed Rwabwogo’s elevation.

“What I am overseeing today is the consecration of a bishop in the Pentecostal tradition,” Osborn said.

Rwabwogo was not being consecrated under the rules governing Catholic, Orthodox or Anglican bishops. Her office derives from the structure and understanding of bishophood adopted by her Pentecostal church tradition.

Osborn described Pentecostalism as part of the wider Christian faith, distinguished by its emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit.

“Pentecostals are part of the body of Christ. We are a Christian branch that emphasises the presence, power and ongoing involvement of the Holy Spirit,” she said.

“We believe that what happened in Acts Chapter 2 is still normal for God’s church today. We believe that the Holy Spirit activates the word of God in our lives.”

She said Pentecostals also believe in speaking in tongues, divine healing and the transforming power of the Gospel.

“We don't want to sound religious; we want to communicate. We believe in divine healing and the Gospel of Jesus Christ that transforms individuals, communities, societies and nations,” she said.

“If the Gospel does not transform, it is just an empty religion.”

The explanation highlights a wider change within parts of modern Pentecostalism. While some Born-Again churches favour titles such as pastor, apostle or evangelist, others have adopted bishophood to define senior oversight over churches, ministries and networks.

Unlike historic episcopal denominations, there is no single worldwide Pentecostal authority that sets qualifications for becoming a bishop. The meaning and requirements can vary between church organisations.
