Lusanja residents to be compensated after wrong eviction order
The Ugandan parliament has resolved to compensate Lusanja residents who were evicted based on a wrong court order.
The legislators approved a motion moved by Mathias Mpuuga seeking to compensate, reinstate people who were wrongly evicted.
In October, over 300 people were reportedly forcefully evicted and their houses demolished on the 9.5-acre piece of land claimed by businessman Medard Kiconco.
Wrong Lusanja eviction
On Wednesday, the government revealed that the residents of Lusanja were illegally evicted.
The Attorney General confirmed in a statement before Parliament after a wrong court order was used to evict people.
The chief magistrate Esther Nasambu and court registrar Rwatoro Baker are likely to face a disciplinary action for issuing the order.
Three charges have been preferred against Nasambu, including conduct prejudicial to the good image of service, producing poor standard work and unsatisfactory performance of duty.
The court order was supposed to be issued for the people of Sekanyonyi zone in Mpererwe.
Relief support
A section of the evictees had camped at the 9.5-acre land protesting the move.
Makeshift houses were constructed after their houses were demolished.
The Ministry of Relief and Disaster Preparedness has been supplying relief items to support the evictees.
