Lulu Jemimah became popular after marrying herself because of the pressure from her parents of finding a good man and settling down.

She hired a wedding gown, got freebies and gifts from friends and her cake was made by her brother.

Lulu was a freelance journalist both in Uganda and Rwanda with an experience of 7 years. She also worked as a communication consultant for the International Organisation for Migration.

Why did Lulu marry herself?

Well, Lulu is much focused on her studies more than anything else at the moment.

She is a student at Oxford University in the UK and majors in a masters in creative writing.

Her "strong passion in life" is focusing on achieving her academic goals rather than walking down the aisle.

So?

She was admitted to the prestigious university for a two-year masters in creative writing program -- but without any funding.

So she needed over 20,000 pounds for her tuition for the whole 2-year program.

Lulu says she looked"for scholarships, grants and even contacted embassies and government bodies" -- and also considered taking a loan -- something not eligible for an international student.

The 32-year-old managed to raise her first year's tuition from 279 people and decided to travel to the UK -- a journey she describes as a "magic carpet ride into the future".

Her first year at Oxford University was extremely difficult.

She recounts sleeping in the college library because she could not afford a room and "did not want to ask for help, yet again".

Leap of faith

Lulu started a GoFundMe campaign to at least support her and raise tuition for the second year of her program.

Her remaining one-year tuition and college fees total to 10,194.00 pounds.

"I must apply for visas every six months and with each chance, I risk getting turned down on grounds of financial inability," she says in her GoFundMe campaign description.

The campaign has so far raised 7,320 pounds of the required 10,194.

And then this happened

A popular Ugandan radio presenter Siima Sabiti and her friend Bernard Mukasa jokingly thought of holding a mock wedding to raise funds for Lulu.

The ceremony started trending on social media with positive responses.

The "couple", which met for the first time on the wedding day, partnered with brands and individuals to make the mock wedding a success.

Guests had to pay UGX20,000 (about $5.31) to be part of the wedding whose proceeds would contribute to Lulu's tuition.
