Flamboyant city pastor released from jail after 5 years
Ugandan born-again Pastor William Paul Muwanguzi, popularly known as Kiwedde, has been released from jail.
The "man of God" was arrested in 2013 over impersonating a Kenyan Catholic priest and performing healing prayers and miracles.
Kiwedde was also accused of extorting huge amounts of money from hundreds of followers at his Holy Fire Ministries church in Kampala.
He was sentenced to four years in jail for impersonation but managed to escape from Mutukula Prison in 2014. He was later rearrested from Zimbabwe and expatriated back to Uganda to complete his sentence with an additional 2 years.
The self-proclaimed pastor was found with fake travel documents, including a passport with fake names.
Authorities from Uganda Prisons Service told reporters in Kampala that Kiwedde completed his jail sentence and is now a free man.
Popularity
Kiwedde became popular as a pastor in Uganda in the mid-2000s because of his "miraculous healing".
He amassed a lot of wealth through what he called spiritual healings and miracles. His moniker "Kiwedde" -- which literally means -- "It's accomplished" -- was his selling point.
He bought luxurious cars, including a Hummer, with personalised number plates.
Controversy
Kiwedde previously faced several charges including terrorism, illegal possession of firearms and assaulting a police officer on duty.
In May 2008, he was arrested at outside the U.S. Embassy where he had a Visa appointment over allegations of stealing a vehicle.
Kiwedde was again arrested in 2012 over allegations that he conspired in a rape incident after a woman claimed that the pastor offered to give her a lift and then tried raping her.
