ADF rebels kill 10 in the volatile eastern DRC
Ugandan rebel group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) has killed 10 people in the Democratic Republic of Congo after attacking a military post in Beni.
The Islamist-rooted militia carried out the attack claiming seven civilians and three soldiers.
The ADF militia operates near the DRC border with Uganda and Beni region has been their target since 2014.
The insecurity by ADF and Ebola epidemic in Beni caused authorities to cancel presidential elections in the region on December 30th.
On Tuesday, at least eight civilians including relatives of soldiers were killed in an overnight incursion by armed men.
The militia which operate in the border area in the DRC’s North Kivu province was created in 1995 to oppose the Ugandan government led by President Kaguta Museveni.
ADF was forced out of Uganda by the army after sporadic attacks on villages in the western part of the country.
The rebel group has killed over 700 civilians and more than UN peacekeepers.
The DRC government has blamed ADF for killings, robberies and kidnappings in the volatile eastern part of the country.
