19-year-old baby thief arrested

Police are holding in custody a 19-year-old girl believed to be behind the theft of a 10-month-old baby in Kikoza Village, Mukono District.

The mother of the 10-month-old baby said Nandoyi had worked as a house help for only three days.

Nandoyi is currently being held at Mukono Police Station vide CRB 814/2018 awaiting to appear in court, according to a police report.

Authorities have attributed baby theft to "ill treatment meted out to them by their employers".

Police have previously urged employers seeking to hire house helps to approach its directorate of Interpol and Peace Support Operations for thorough screening to avoid such incidents.

They said they have a "a criminal database which entails fingerprints of every person that has ever been held as a suspect or criminally charged by police across the country so once a person brings the intended employees for vetting, police cross checks with their database and advises the employer accordingly".
