Mpuuga reconciliation still possible - NUP

Hon Joel Senyonyi the Leader of Opposition (LOP) in Parliament said yesterday that the party is still open to dialoguing with Mpuuga and bringing him back to its good graces.

“We have not kicked him out of the party,” Senyonyi said.

"Even sitting with him for talks, we have no problem at all because we have been inviting him for different meetings.”

The NUP has recently come under increasing pressure from mainly the Catholic Church and Buganda Kingdom over how it has handled Hon Mpuuga’s corruption allegations, reaching the extent of firing him from his position as Vice President.

Both the King of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi and Prime Minister Charles Peter Mayiga have spoken out directly or indirectly against the party’s approach to the matter.

But while addressing the press on Easter Sunday, Senyonyi said the NUP has offered Mpuuga multiple opportunities to the issues to rest

He said Mpuuga was invited to meetings including one for NEC and another for the parliamentary caucus which he snubbed.

“There have been different opportunities and there will be more.”

Senyonyi however, said the party will not simply abandon the contentious matter regardless of the criticism it is facing.

“We are not fighting him as a person; what we are emphasizing is that there will not be a meeting between us and him to ignore what he has done because what was done was wrong and needs to be fixed,” he added.
