During the scuffle as he and his team returned from visiting NUP lawyer George Musisi, Bobi Wine said he had a gun pointed at him by a police officer identified as Erias Twisigye.
Twesigye is a Station OC at Kira Road Police Station.
He added that the officer only backed off when he realised he was being recorded.
The ordeal
Bobi Wine recounted;
“Shortly after leaving (Musisi’s) home, we met police officers charging toward us, shooting explosives and beating those that couldn't run fast enough."
“My driver saw them and quickly rolled up the car windows. Unfortunately, the car roof was open and one officer climbed up and paper sprayed us through the roof. This forced us to come out.”
“One Robert Kuzara of the DPC Kira Road Police station shouted, “Shoot him!” Thankfully, this was captured on video by bystanders
“The shooting began and Twesigye pulled out a gun but I told him “you are on camera.”
“When he saw the camera, he backed up, moved around the car, grabbed a teargas canister from another officer and threw it at us. It exploded on my left leg, shattering my shoes and hurting me badly.”
He added, “I salute all the people who recorded the events as they unfolded. We have been asking people to use their cameras as their weapons. Without them, we wouldn't substantiate the truth.”
Bobi Wine was rushed to Nsambya Hospital where he spent a night before being discharged the following morning.
Police speak out
Police in two separate statements denied hurting Bobi Wine.
Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesman said yesterday, that Bobi Wine “appeared to stumble amid apparent teargas near his car, resulting in his injury.”
Kutuuma also accused the NUP team of disrupting traffic, stoning police officers and other acts of hooliganism.”
At today’s press conference, Bobi Wine announced that the party is proceeding to take legal action against the individual police officers involved in the incident.
